Dessert Dish, Caughley, c.1785

This Caughley dessert dish is printed with the 'Fisherman' or 'Pleasure Boat' pattern. The diamond shape of this dish with its convex and concave curved outline, is described by contemporary accounts as 'Melon'. It is one of the four basic shapes used in Caughley dessert services, 'Square', 'Shell', and 'Heart' being the other three.

The base bears the impressed 'SALOPIAN' mark.

There is a manufacturing fault to the inside of the footrim in the form of a glazed over chip.

Condition: Excellent - no damage or restoration. The printed pattern is clear and detailed.

Dimensions: Height 1 3/4" (4.4cm); Length 10 1/2" (26.7cm); Width 7" (17.8cm)
