Sparrow beak Milk Jug, Worcester, soft paste porcelain, c.1770 |
This large sparrow beak milk jug is decorated with the popular Three Flowers print, consisting of a central floral bouquet, scattered sprays and butterflies or moths. The pattern was in use at Worcester between 1770-80, and was much copied in its time by the Lowestoft and Caughley manufactories. The base bears the script W mark. This piece has a good greenish-straw translucency. Condition: There is a small filled chip and an associated hairline from the rim of the pouring lip; no other damage or restoration and no over-painting. The design is good and clear, and the jug displays handsomely well. Dimensions: Height 5" (12.7cm) II.C.19 - Worcester Blue & White Porcelain 1751-1790, Branyan, French & Sandon (Barrie & Jenkins, 1989). Godden's Guide to Blue and White Porcelain, Geoffrey A. Godden (Antique Collectors' Club, 2004). |
