Coffee cup, Worcester, soft paste porcelain, c.1770 and later

This decoration matches the well-known Hope-Edwardes pattern of Giles claret ground dessert wares painted with fruit and flowers. The porcelain itself, dating from c.1770, may have been initially decorated in a simple gilt pattern, perhaps at the Giles studio. This pattern was probably removed during the 19th century and the cup redcorated in the manner of the Hope-Edwardes pattern. A similar tea bowl and saucer was in the Zorensky Collection, although it is not known who commissioned the redecoration of any of these pieces or where they were painted. The tooled gilding of the cornucopia claret ground is of an exceptionally high quality. The diminishing gilt dots on the handle is a characteristic Giles feature and may have remained from the initial decoration, as the gold appears to be slightly different to that of the gilt flowers.

Unmarked.

Condition: Excellent - no chips, cracks or restoration. The enamel painting is rather fine with just very minor wear to the gilt decoration in places. There is the expected light kiln spit-out just inside the rim from the subsequent re-firing.

Dimensions: Height 2 1/2" (6.3cm)
