Teapot and Cover, Worcester, soft paste porcelain, c.1760 |
This delightful early Worcester teapot is of a charming small size, and is beautifully painted with attractive European floral bouquets, including a pink rose and anemone, sprigs and winged insects. The fine potting, paste, glaze, flattened-globular shape and pointed finial all indicate a production date in the early 1760s. The bold floral and insect decoration is rather unusual, with flowers and combinations of colour not typically seen on Worcester. The strainer has five holes. The teapot is unmarked. Condition: Excellent - no chips, cracks or restoration, just a little surface wear and kiln dust. There is a small manufacturing flaw in the form of a glazed clay tear around the upper part of the top handle terminal. This fault would have occurred in the kiln, after the handle had been applied to the body of the teapot, and is fairly typical of early English porcelain wares from this period. This fine teapot would make a handsome addition to any collection of early English porcelain. Dimensions: Height (to top of finial) 5 1/2" (14cm); Length (from tip to handle) 7 1/2" (19cm) Worcester Porcelain 1751-1790: The Zorensky Collection, Simon Spero & John Sandon (Antique Collectors' Club, 1996). |
