Coffee cup, Worcester, soft paste porcelain, c.1770

This coffee cup is brightly painted with a Mandarin pattern showing Chinese figures in a landscape. One side shows two women seated on a rock, engaged in their tasks, and the reverse is painted with a boy in red, holding what looks like a ruyi sceptre. The scenes are divided by stylised trees and undergrowth. The rim is decorated with a gilt line, and the inside is painted with an unusual and ornate border design in gilt.

Grooved handle. Unmarked.

Condition: Two sections from rim cleanly re-stuck. One small rim chip where the break occurred. The enamels are in good condition, with only minor wear.

Dimensions: Height 2 5/8" (6.7cm)
