Teapot Stand, Spode, bone china, c.1800 |
This interesting oval teapot stand is decorated in a pattern derived from Chinese export wares, with lotus shaped panels, outlined in blue, containing a single flower. A similar pattern appears on Worcester porcelain of the 1770s, although the example here is painted over the glaze with blue enamel instead of underglaze blue. The light brown rim, imitating Chinese export porcelain, has been decorated with a line of gold. The flowers are particularly inventive, although the rosebud is immediately recognisable. The glaze on the base has been combed, a feature of some early Spode wares. Condition: No chips, cracks or restoration, just some wear to the gilt line rim and enamel decoration. The very white porcelain body is heavily crazed in places and there is a small patch of staining. Dimensions: Length 8 1/8" (20.6cm) Spode, Leonard Whiter (Barrie & Jenkins), 1989. |
