Teacup, Meissen, hard paste porcelain, c.1750 |
This small Meissen teacup is handpainted with attractive flowers in puce camaieu. The main bouquet is of a rose, and the rest of the cup, including the scroll handle and interior is painted with scattered sprigs. The rim is painted with a chocolate line. Painted underglaze blue crossed swords mark and Pressnummer 17. Worcester looked back to Meissen of this period when they produced teawares using this shape in the 1770s. Even the blue crossed swords mark and number were imitated by Worcester on these wares. We recently sold a Champion's Bristol teapot and cover decorated in a similar manner, in imitation of Meissen. Condition: There are two small flat chips and an associated crack to the footrim, and minor wear to the brown painted rim and interior floral decoration. No other damage or restoration. Dimensions: Diameter 2 7/8" (7.3cm); Height 1 5/8" (4.1cm) 18th-Century German Porcelain, George Savage (Rockliff, 1958). |
