| Teapot Stand, New Hall, hybrid hard paste porcelain, c.1800 |
|
This oval teapot stand is almost certainly from the New Hall factory, and possibly an unrecorded bat-printed pattern depicting a draped classical female figure being drawn along in a chariot by two birds. This same scene is recorded on New Hall teawares with the pattern number 487, however that particular design is printed in blue with a gold foliage border. The example shown here is printed in a pale greyish green with a simple border of one thick and one thin gold line. This border is also seen on the unrecorded pattern number known as u558, however that particular design is printed in manganese. A teapot stand would have formed part of a tea service, and the shape shown here corresponds with that of the New Hall 'Old Oval' shape. This rather scarce New Hall shape was the first to be decorated with bat-printed designs, and a tea service in this shape, complete with teapot stand, is illustrated in Geoffrey Godden's New Hall Porcelains (2004). The New Hall 'Old Oval' shape was soon superseded by new style forms, including the prow shape. The base is typically unglazed. There is no mark or pattern number. Condition: Fair - no chips, cracks or restoration, but there is wear to the printed design and the gilt border. Dimensions: Length 7 3/4" (19.7cm) A partial reconstruction of the New Hall Pattern Book, Patricia Preller (2003). New Hall & Its Imitators, David Holgate, Faber (1971). New Hall Porcelains, Geoffrey A. Godden, Antique Collectors' Club (2004). |
