Faience Salt , probably French, c.1780

This unusual oval salt, dating from the late Eighteenth Century, would probably have been made in France, possibly around the Rouen area. Salt was heavily taxed at this time and so was a commodity available only to wealthy consumers.

The painted floral and line decoration has run slightly in the kiln and the glaze has bubbled under the base during firing.

Condition: Good - only typical flaking to the fragile tin glaze around the edges. No restoration.

This rare survivor from the dining table would make a welcome addition to any serious collection of Eighteenth Century pottery.

Dimensions: Height 1 1/2" (3.8cm); Length 4" (10.1cm)
