Octagonal Dish, Turner, c.1800 |
This stone-ware dish is printed in blue with a chinoiserie landscape, imitating popular Chinese export wares of the late 18th-Century. The dish would have been manufactured by John and William Turner, sons of John Turner, in Lane End, Longton, Staffordshire. The firm closed in 1806. The painted 'Turner's Patent' mark appears on rare stone-ware type earthenwares, c.1800-5. This body was patented in January 1800 and the rights were sold to Spode in 1805. The dish has a combed base with evidence of the curved kiln furniture used during firing. Owing to the method of manufacture, the underglaze blue has run in a few small areas of the border. Condition: Excellent - no chips, cracks or restoration. There is minor surface wear commensurate with use. Dimensions: Length 11 3/4" (29.8cm) The Dictionary of Blue & White Printed Pottery 1780-1880, Volume I, A.W. Coysh & R.K. Henrywood (Antique Collectors' Club, 2001). |
