Pearlware Loving Cup, probably Yorkshire, c.1795

Attractively decorated in high temperature Pratt colours, this pearlware loving cup was probably manufactured by one of the Yorkshire potteries towards the end of the 18th century. The bowl, stem, and foot are painted with an underglaze blue line, and the main body of the cup is festooned with floral garlands. The handles feature a feathery pattern in dark brown. These patterns and colour combinations of blues, greens and ochres have been found on other Yorkshire wares of this period. The pearl glaze has wonderful blue pools on the underside of the base.

A loving cup was traditionally a ceremonial or commemorative item, often passed from person to person at banquets.
