Coffee Can, Miles Mason, c.1815 |
This Miles Mason coffee can is decorated around the outside with floral moulding reserved in white on a pale blue ground. The interior is painted with a brightly coloured enamel floral spray and sprigs. The moulded handle is decorated with a design in gilt. This type of decoration was popular in the early Nineteenth Century, and Spode also produced similar wares, although they tended to be just moulded without the painted decoration. Plate 1327 in A Directory of British Teapots (M. Berthoud, 2006) shows a Lane Delph C.J. & G.M. Mason teapot conforming to pattern number 878. In all probability, this coffee can is decorated in the same pattern. Condition: Excellent - no chips, cracks or restoration. The gilt and painted decoration is pristine. Dimensions: Height 2 1/2" (6.3cm) Michael Berthoud illustrates a Miles Mason teacup in this pattern. Michael Berthoud, A Compendium of British Cups, (Micawber Publications, 1990). |
