Coffee cup, Thomas Wolfe (Factory Z), porcelain, c.1800 |
This coffee cup is decorated with an attractive and restrained gilt design. The wide loop handle is of the characteristic Spode-type with square bottom attachment. For years the identity of the manufacturer known only as Factory Z was a mystery. Certainly they produced good quality wares from c.1795-1815. Nowdays, Thomas Wolfe is generally believed to have been the maker in question. Condition: Very Good - no chips, cracks or restoration. The gilding is in excellent condition. There is a small firing crack inside the cup, dating from the time of manufacture. There is also some faint crazing to the glaze, a result of the manufacturing process of this soft greyish body, and entirely typical of Thomas Wolfe porcelain from this early period. Dimensions: Height " (cm) Geoffrey A. Godden, Staffordshire Porcelain (Granada, 1983). |
