Plate, Andrew Stevenson, c.1820

This plate, transfer printed in blue with a Willow Pattern design, was manufactured by the firm of Andrew Stevenson of Cobridge, Staffordshire, in around 1820. The firm produced earthenwares between 1813 and 1830.

The Willow Pattern traditionally features a pagoda on the right, with a willow tree leaning over a three-arched bridge. Three figures cross the bridge to the left. A covered boat floats before a small island, and two doves fly in the sky. All of these essential elements can be seen on this Stevenson plate.

The impressed mark of 'Stevenson' above a three-masted ship appears on the base, along with a blue painted number six or nine. Three sets of three spur marks can also be seen on the underside of the rim. It is also possible to see how the plates would have been stacked in the kiln, as small unglazed stilt marks occur on the front.

Condition: Very Good - no chips, cracks or restoration. There are several knife marks on the plate from use. The pearlware glaze is finely crazed. This is typical of early wares, and the piece is a good example of transfer printed pearlware from a rare firm.

Dimensions: Diameter 8 1/8" (20cm)
