Coffee cup, New Hall, hard paste porcelain, c.1795

This coffee cup is decorated in the famille rose pattern 353. The interior is painted with a complex purple border, and the exterior is decorated with two opposing flower sprays beneath a ring of green and purple husks. Typical of early New Hall hybrid hard paste porcelains, this finely potted piece has a glazed firing crack to the uppermost handle terminal. There is also some fritting to the inside border dating from the time of manufacture. These original faults are indicative of the pioneering methods employed by this early Staffordshire porcelain manufactory.

The pattern is illustrated in Pat Preller's New Hall Pattern Book.
