Tea Bowl, New Hall, hard paste porcelain, c.1795 |
This tea bowl is decorated in the printed Trench Mortar pattern, with blue wash applied by hand. The so-called Trench Mortar pattern was introduced at New Hall in around c.1790, and used for roughly a decade. Certainly other manufacturers used this pattern, particularly on earthenware, where it is known by the names Malay House, Malayan Village or Pearl River House. Few other English porcelain manufacturers used this printed pattern, although the Chinese did export a version of it. Condition: Good - no chips, cracks or restoration. There is some fritting and wear to the gilt rim. Dimensions: Diameter 3 1/2" (8.9cm); Height 1 7/8" (4.8cm) Geoffrey A. Godden, New Hall Porcelains (Antique Collectors' Club, 2004).
