Figure of a Boy with a Dog, Derby, soft paste porcelain, c.1775

This most delightful Derby figure is marked on the base with four patches, the result of resting the figure on clay balls or pads in the kiln. This was to prevent it from sticking to the kiln during firing.

The use of turquoise enamel on the lining of the boy's jacket and also on the pierced rococo base is typical of this period, as Derby was imitating the trends seen in Chelsea Gold Anchor figures. Also included with these trends are the flushed cheeks and floral bocage seen here.

The boy and his dog are beautifully painted, particularly the boy's delicate facial features and the decoration on his floral waistcoat, along with the dog's pretty face and markings. Even the soles of the boy's shoes are painted a dusky pink. His breeches and shoes are be-ribboned and his clothes generally are most attractively coloured.

Condition: The hands have been professionally restored, as have parts of the bocage, but otherwise the figure is in good order. There is some wear to the turquoise enamels on the front of the base, and minor losses.

Dimensions: Height 6 1/2" (16.5cm)
