Trio, New Hall, hard paste porcelain, c.1810

This beautiful trio of teacup, saucer and coffee can is decorated with an Imari design corresponding with New Hall pattern 446. Underglaze blue branches, pale mushroom 'feathers' and bunches of orange grapes are all richly overgilded. The rims are gilded, and the handles are painted with a single gilt line and arrow. The centre of the teacup is painted with underglaze blue leaves, a bunch of orange grapes, and gilt. Feathers and grapes are painted around the inside border of both cups.

Condition: Excellent - no chips, cracks or restoration. The enamels and gilt show very little sign of wear. The bases of the saucer and teacup are painted with a workman's mark in orange. There is a firing fault to the underside of the saucer where the clay has shrunk in the kiln.

Dimensions: Saucer - Diameter 5 1/2" (14cm); Height 1 1/4" (3.1cm); Teacup - Diameter 3 1/4" (8.2cm); Height 2 1/4" (5.7cm); Coffee can - Diameter 2 1/2" (6.3cm); Height 2 3/8" (6cm)

Teawares decorated in pattern 446 are illustrated in Geoffrey A. Godden's New Hall Porcelains (Antique Collectors' Club, 2004).
